North Texas outscored Tulane, 24-5, in the first quarter
DENTON, Texas — The UNT women's basketball team (17-7, 9-3 AAC) defeated Tulane, 69-64, Sunday at the Super Pit in front of a national audience on ESPNU.
In the program's first ever game on national television, the Mean Green's victory tied a record for most home wins in a season with Sunday being their 12th win at The Pit this season.
North Texas got out to a commanding lead early with a 9-0 run to begin the contest turning into a 24-5 first quarter lead. Tulane's five points in the quarter tied the fewest points the Mean Green have allowed in any quarter this season.
"We came out and set the tone, which was exactly how we wanted to come out today," head coach Jason Burton said. "We came out intentional about playing the way we wanted to play."
UNT took a 37-21 lead into halftime behind six first-half 3-pointers. The Mean Green started 6-of-6 from behind the arc and ended with a season-high eight 3-pointers on the day.
The Green Wave (15-8, 8-4 AAC) gained some momentum in the second half, cutting the deficit to 53-46 heading into the fourth quarter. Tulane remained within single digits in the fourth quarter, but were kept at a distance by clutch free throw shooting from North Texas. The Mean Green made 10 free throws in the final quarter, which proved integral to the win.
Desiree Wooten led the team in points with 16, notably going 4-4 from the free throw line. Ereauna Hardaway followed with 15 points, hitting three 3-pointers to tie her single-game high. Tommisha Lampkin also reached double figures before fouling out as each of UNT's three forwards available Sunday fouled out.
The Mean Green's foul trouble forced Chania Price into action as the true freshman stepped up in a big way. She tied a career high with 10 points, went 3-of-4 from the free throw line and took a massive charge on a fast break late in the game to keep momentum in UNT's favor.
North Texas returns to the Super Pit on Wednesday Feb. 12, taking on Memphis at 6:30 p.m. as the Mean Green look to remain in the conference championship race.
