FORT WORTH, Texas — Chase Lehr opened the outdoor season on a high note winning the men's 800 meters to lead UNT track and field at The TCU Alumni Invitational.
Coming off a second-place finish in the 800 meters at the AAC Indoor Championships that saw him set a new indoor school record in the event, Lehr carried that momentum into the outdoor season winning the first individual race of his career. He crossed the line in 1:52.53 to beat out a trio of TCU runners who finished behind him.
The TCU Alumni Invitational began on Friday with the discus and hammer throw competitions taking place at an off-site location. Notably, Jake Parchman broke his own school record in the hammer throw taking the mark from 62.29 meters that he set back in the 2023 season to 63.27 meters. His new mark leads the American conference as he looks to capture the hammer throw title this season after redshirting during the 2024 outdoor season.
Along with Parchman, two other Mean Green student-athletes collected runner-up finishes in their respective events. Icey Green shattered her previous personal best in the long jump with a mark of 6.07 meters. Meanwhile, Clarence McGill clocked a 52.29 in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing behind TCU's school record holder Jayden Douglas.
North Texas had some other impressive performances on the day, including top-five finishes from Phil Cotton in the long jump, Kason Johnson in the triple jump and Jomauri Murray in the 110-meter hurdles. Murray's time of 14.16 tied the fifth-fastest mark in program history.
"I'm happy with our performance this weekend but definitely not satisfied," head coach Doug Marshall said. "We need to work on executing better across the board. We had some good things happen this weekend, but overall I felt like we are better and can be better than what we showed this weekend."
Up next for the Mean Green is a three-day meet hosted by NC State that begins Thursday, March 27.
