Jake Parchman and Victor Neiva set school records at the meet
RALEIGH, N.C. — Seniors Jake Parchman and Victor Neiva set school records to lead UNT track and field at the Raleigh Relays over the weekend.
Both athletes set a new record mark in events they were already the school record holder in. Parchman has topped the hammer throw school record in each of his two meets this season, launching it 67.16 meters in a third-place finish. Neiva improved his personal best in the 10,000 meters by over 15 seconds, clocking a 29:04.20 late Thursday night.
As a whole, the Mean Green compiled 11 top-10 finishes in a meet with a competitive field full of SEC, ACC and Big Ten programs.
"I was happy with the performances as a whole this weekend," head coach Doug Marshall said. "The distance crew definitely stood out the most this weekend with Victor breaking his record and great performances from Chase (Lehr) and Connor Bartek. I think we have to be better about trusting our abilities as athletes and going after the performances we want."
In addition to the ones that were broken, the men's team threatened a pair of other school records. Already holding the indoor record in the 800 meters, Chase Lehr now has the third-fastest outdoor time in the 800 meters after clocking a 1:48.80 while placing sixth. Hendrick Hundl put the 110-meter hurdles record on watch on Friday when he ran a personal-best time of 14.04. It marks the second-fastest time in program history behind Joe Jubert's 13.98 from 1973.
Other top-10 finishers for the men included Chris Johnson in the 400 meters (6th), Clarence McGill in the 400-meter hurdles (7th) and Derrick Warren Jr. in the long jump (9th). Vitus Hansgaard and Akeel Hanchard made their season debuts in the javelin placing fifth and eighth, respectively, while the men's 4x400-meter relay recorded a fifth-place finish to round out the meet.
On the women's side, Aariyana Williams continued her stellar sophomore season with a personal best and sixth-place finish in the women's 400 meters. Bolaji Subair finished seventh in the discus as the true freshman recorded her second top-10 finish in as many meets.
The Mean Green will return to Denton to host the Bill Schmidt Invite on April 4-5 at the Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.
