BROOKSVILLE, Fla. - The UNT women's golf team finished fifth at the American Athletic Conference Championship at Southern Hills Plantation Club on Wednesday after shooting a 1-over 289 - its best round of the tournament - to finish with a three-day score of 880.
The Mean Green were led by junior Mason Lewis, who finished tied for ninth at 1-over par with a 74-70-73 to earn her second top-10 finish at the AAC Championship in as many years after tying for fifth last year as a sophomore. The highlight of the day came from Malisone Chanthapanya, who fired a 3-under 69, thanks to an eagle and three birdies, to move up 17 spots to finish tied for 20th at 6-over. Sophomore Katharina Anglett also tied for 20th in her conference championship debut, and Shreya Pal matched Lewis' final-round 73 to tie for 23rd at 7-over.
"Obviously, we are disappointed to not play to our standard at conference," head coach Michael Akers said. "We were ranked No. 1 in the conference virtually the entire year. Mason played solid again. Southern Hills fits her eye. We have been invited to the (National Golf Invitational), which is nice. I'm very excited for next season as we add some very solid players. With our returners and new players, we will be extremely competitive."
UNT will now take aim at the National Golf Invitational, which is the college golf equivalent to basketball's NIT, and is entering its third year of existence. The event will be played May 8-11 at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes in Maricopa, Arizona.
