Women's Golf Accepts NGI Invite

DENTON - The UNT women's golf team's season is not over yet.
The Mean Green will play in the third annual National Golf Invitational (NGI), which is put on by Golfweek, on May 9-11, at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes in Maricopa, Arizona. The teams will play a practice round on May 8.
The tournament, which was created as a college golf equivalent to basketball's NIT, will feature the Mean Green, along with Coastal Carolina, Eastern Michigan, Oral Roberts, Mercer, defending champion Rutgers, Santa Clara, Seattle, UNCG and UNCW. UNT is the field's highest ranked team, and this will mark the fifth straight year the program has taken part in postseason play after NCAA Regional appearances the past four seasons.
The first of those four years, 2021, saw UNT in the middle of a collegiate golf controversy when their NCAA LSU Regional was canceled due to rain, prompting Barstool Sports to create the Let Them Play Classic in Arizona, which drew national headlines, and saw the Mean Green come home with a championship trophy and Audrey Tan claim the individual championship.
"We have been very fortunate to play in May the past few years," head coach Michael Akers said. "The last time we went to Arizona in May some very special things happened. I am hoping history repeats itself and we bring a trophy home. We are grateful to the NGI selection committee and Lance Ringer at Golfweek for this opportunity.
"Our team is excited and hungry to finish our season on a high note. The course plays hard and fast so we are doing our best to prepare. The ladies are working hard to prepare for finals and keep their golf games sharp."
The winner of the event will receive an invite to the Bruin Wave Invitational, hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine, next February.
Fans can follow the program throughout the year on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram @MeanGreenWGolf.
