DENTON, Texas — Twelve UNT track and field student-athletes have earned berths to compete at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in College Station, Texas, from Wednesday, May 28 to Saturday, May 31.
The meet consists of the first two rounds of the NCAA postseason. In order to qualify for the meet, individual athletes had to be ranked in the top 48 in their respective region.
Jake Parchman is the highest ranked member of the Mean Green, coming in at No. 14 in the men's hammer throw. The American Athletic Conference champion has posted the top-five marks in program history this season, including the school record of 67.16 meters that he set at the Raleigh Relays on March 29.
Parchman is making his second appearance at the NCAA West Preliminary Round, as are Brya Brewer and Hendrick Hundl. Vitus Hansgaard has qualified for the fourth time in his career, while the rest of the Mean Green athletes will be making their first appearance at the meet.
Hansgaard will enter the meet with the No. 34 mark in the javelin throw, one spot behind teammate Akeel Hanchard. Hanchard placed third at the AAC Championships to earn all-conference honors for the second straight year. The duo will continue a streak of eight regional meets in-a-row featuring at least one male javelin thrower from North Texas dating back to 2017.
Hundl qualified for the NCAA West Prelims in 2024 as a member of Sam Houston. He will head back to the regional meet in his first year in Denton following a 13.76 in the prelims of the AAC Championships. The time marked a new school record, surpassing his previous best of 13.82 from the Alumni Muster on May 3.
Derrick Warren will become the first long jumper to appear at the regional meet for UNT since 2014. The silver medalist at the conference championships, his mark of 7.55 meters from the meet moved him inside the top 48. Chase Lehr was a late addition into the field for the 800 meters, but will be making his first appearance at the NCAA West Preliminary Round. A two-time conference runner-up in the 800 meters, Lehr posted his personal best at the Raleigh Relays earlier this season, clocking a 1:48.80 that stands as the third-best time in program history.
Clarence McGill will be the final competitor for the Mean Green men on Wednesday evening. He holds the No. 39 time in the region in the 400-meter hurdles with a mark of 51.02 from the AAC finals where he placed fifth.
On the women's side, throwers Mackenzie Kuehl and Ava Roberts will be making their first career appearances in the NCAA postseason. Kuehl enters as the No. 34 javelin thrower in the region following a third-place finish at the conference meet with a career-best throw of 48.51 meters. Meanwhile, Roberts will continue her stellar true freshman season that includes all-conference honors at both AAC Championships. She was the runner-up with a mark of 15.58 meters at the outdoor championships in Charlotte.
Aariyana Williams and Morgan Taylor will represent the women's team on the track. Williams will compete in the 400 meters on Thursday evening, while Taylor was the last runner accepted for the 100-meter hurdles. Brewer will be the last of the Mean Green to appear with the first round of the triple jump being contested Saturday afternoon.
The NCAA West Preliminary Rounds will be streamed live on ESPN+ each day, while live results will be provided by the NCAA. Twelve competitors from each individual event will advance from the first-round site to the NCAA Championships hosted in Eugene, Oregon, June 11-14.
