Neiva set the meet record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase
COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The UNT track and field teams looked ready for the postseason as they competed in their final regular season meet at the Alumni Muster in College Station, Texas.
Victor Neiva was the lone champion for the Mean Green, winning the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal best time of 8:54.15. Neiva not only won the race, but set the meet record and recorded the second-fastest time in school history. Hunter Hendry also set a personal best in the event, clocking a 9:29.51 to place fourth.
Neiva's win was one of several great performances for North Texas athletes on the day, which included a school record being shattered.
Hendrick Hundl's 13.82 in the 110-meter hurdles blew past the previous record of 13.98 by Joe Jubert that had stood since 1973. Hundl took fourth in the event, just in front of teammate Jomauri Murray who also shook up the record book with a personal best 14.09 that is now the fourth-fastest time in program history.
On the women's side, London Culbreath and Icey Green had success competing in multiple events. Culbreath posted a personal best in the 1,500 meters and nearly snatched another PR in the 800 meters, while placing in the top four in both events. Similarly, Green recorded top-10 finishes in the triple jump and long jump while taking the best jump of her career in the triple jump that marked 12.22 meters.
With all the individual success at the Alumni Muster, arguably the most impressive feat of the day was all 10 athletes competing for UNT in the 200 meters clocked their best time of the season. The women's 200 meters was contested first where C'Nai Childress, Alika Crawford and Janai Williams ran their best races of the season, while Jada Foster posted a career-best time. Shortly after that, Jaylen Washington, Nehemiah Ray, Derrick Warren, Chris Johnson, Jeremiah Durham and Evan Nichols posted their personal bests in the men's 200 meters with Washington leading the pack at 21.01 to place fourth.
The Mean Green had several other notable finishes, such as three javelin throwers placing in the top six and Chase Lehr taking third in the men's 800 meters.
UNT will have a week off before heading to Charlotte, N.C., for the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships May 15-17.
