Whitter Named American Defensive Player of the Week

IRVING, Texas – Shane Whitter spearheaded a dominant defensive effort for the Mean Green on Saturday in a 59-10 win over Washington State, and for his effort, the senior linebacker from Burlington, North Carolina, was named the American Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

In Saturday's rout of the Cougars, Whitter led the UNT defense with a game-high eight tackles, including five solo stops, a tackle for loss and his first career interception that he returned 43 yards to the Washington State 12-yard line to set up a Mean Green touchdown.

Through three games this season, UNT has allowed just 40 points, which is the fewest the Mean Green have allowed through three games since the 1984 season, and Whitter has been one of the leaders of the unit. He leads the team in tackles with 25 and has one of the team's four interceptions this year.

Whitter is the first UNT player to earn Defensive Player of the Week honors since the program joined the American prior to the 2023 season.
