Senior from Douala, Cameroon, opens fall season with big win
CHAMPAIGN, Illinois – UNT senior Stadfany Nformi opened her fall season with a bang Sunday when she took home the title at the UTR Pro Tennis Tour event in Champaign.
Nformi went unbeaten in group play and followed it up with a pair of big-time victories in the semifinal and final to win the championship.
In the title match, Nformi was pushed to the brink facing off against Ellery Mendell. After splitting the first two sets 6-4, 4-6, the match was pushed as far as it could go with a seven-point tiebreak with the third set knotted at 6-6.
In the tiebreak, Nformi fell behind 6-3 before mounting a furious comeback and winning 8-6 to take the set and the title.
On Saturday, Nformi knocked off Carolina Manzi 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 to advance to Sunday's championship final.
The tournament consisted of four groups with the winner of each group advancing to Saturday's semifinal match.
Nformi started the tournament on Tuesday by dropping her first set 4-6 and proceeded to not drop another set in group action.
The senior from Cameroon won Tuesday 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, followed it up with a victory on Wednesday 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, and closed group play with a 6-4, 6-1 win on Thursday to advance to the semifinal.
Nformi and the Mean Green return to action for their first full team event of the fall this Friday-Sunday in the Diving Eagle Invite at Waranch Tennis Complex.
