IRVING — UNT junior forward Claire Niedermeier scored a pair of goals in the Mean Green's lone match last week to earn a road draw with Rice, and for her performance, she was named the American Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
The Mean Green battled back to earn a 3-3 draw with the Owls on Thursday night in Houston, with Niedermeier opening the scoring in the 2nd minute and then tying the match in the 83rd minute with her third converted penalty kick in as many tries this season.
"So well deserved on Claire receiving Offensive Player of the Week," head coach John Hedlund said. "Scoring two goals on the road against Rice and 11 goals at this point of the season is an incredible accomplishment!"
Niedermeier's 11 goals this season put her in a tie for 14th in the country in total goals — five behind the nation's leader – and a tie for first in the American.
The conference nod marks the third superlative winner for the Mean Green this season and the second for Niedermeier, who won the award back on August 24 after scoring a hat trick in a win over McNeese State and the lone goal in a 1-0 win over ULM.
The Mean Green will hit the road on Thursday to play East Carolina at 6 p.m., before returning home on Sunday for a 1 p.m. kick against Memphis.
