IRVING — UNT junior forward Claire Niedermeier scored a pair of goals in Thursday's road draw at East Carolina and came back home on Sunday to tie for the team lead with four shots to apply constant pressure on conference leader Memphis in a 1-1 draw, and for her performance, she was named the American Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. It marks the second straight week Niedermeier has won the award after she was given the nod on Oct. 19, after scoring two goals in a road draw at Rice.
Niedermeier now has 13 goals on the season and 25 in her career, and she leads the American Conference and is eighth nationally in total goals. She scored her second straight brace in a two-minute span to give the Mean Green an early lead at East Carolina. She also led the way offensively on Sunday, as UNT outshot the conference leader in shots per game and goals per game, including a dominant second half when the Mean Green outshot the Tigers 10-4.
Senior defender Georgia Guenther also earned an Honorable Mention nod for scoring the team's lone goal against Memphis on Sunday. Less than two minutes after Memphis took a 1-0 lead in the second half, Guenther took a corner kick and hit a brilliant left-footed shot directly at goal that bent into the Memphis net and served as the equalizer as the Mean Green kept their postseason hopes alive.
"Both are so well-deserving of the awards this week," head coach John Hedlund said. "Claire has been an absolute joy to coach. Our player-coach relationship has always been strong, and we just seem to feed off each other during games. I'm also really happy for Georgia — she has been the ultimate team player, and when she got her chance, she scored a massive goal for her team."
The conference nod marks the fourth superlative winner for the Mean Green this season and the third for Niedermeier, who won the award back on August 24 after scoring a hat trick in a win over McNeese State and the lone goal in a 1-0 win over ULM, as well as last week. It's Guenther's first conference nod with the Mean Green.
The Mean Green will stay home this week to play rival UTSA on Friday at 7 p.m., before hitting the road for the regular-season finale on Nov. 3, at Tulsa.
