FAU Scores Two Late to Beat Mean Green

DENTON, Texas – UNT head soccer coach John Hedlund made some lineup adjustments for Thursday's match against FAU hoping to inject some more speed and explosiveness into the offense and generate some more scoring chances.
Both of those objectives were accomplished on Thursday at John Hedlund Field at Norma Knobel Hunt Stadium, but it didn't yield the results he was hoping to see, as FAU scored two late goals to win 2-0 and give the Mean Green their first home conference loss this season.
"Right now, we just have no luck in front of the net — if we did, we would've been up 3-0 at halftime," Hedlund said. "Outside of finishing, I thought we were the better team for most of the night. You have to give FAU credit for taking advantage of the few chances they had, while nothing seemed to go in for us despite all of our chances. Overall, I thought we played really well; we just need a little luck to go our way."
UNT (4-6-3, 0-3-2) outshot the Owls (5-5-4, 3-2-0) 6-0 in the first half and forced FAU goalkeeper Lily Holden to make four first-half saves. The Owls evened up the shot total in the second half but UNT still managed to outshoot them 14-7 over the course of the night.
FAU converted two chances in the second half to secure the win, as the Owls opened the scoring in the 75th minute off a corner kick that was hit off the crossbar before Sulton Markee put the rebound in the back of the net. Six minutes later, the American Conference's leading goal scorer had a breakaway from midfield, as UNT was pushed up trying to get an equalizer, and Hailey Santiago outran UNT's defense before maneuvering around UNT goalkeeper Sarah Margaret Seabrook to score her 11th goal of the season.
UNT had a couple of late chances to find the scoreboard, none better than a shot from inside the box ripped by Claire Niedermeier off the far post.
The Mean Green will be off this weekend before traveling to Houston next week to face Rice on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
