DENTON, Texas – Three Mean Green players posted career-highs in scoring while Otaifo Esenabhalu tied her career-high in rebounds with 18 in just 21 minutes as the UNT women's basketball team opened the new season with a dominant 101-48 victory over Newman Monday night at the Super Pit.
It marked the fourth time in the Jason Burton era that the Mean Green have broken the 100-point barrier and their fourth straight season starting 1-0.
Cherie Spencer, KaMyra Barber, and Kalysta Martin all posted personal bests in the scoring column, led by Spencer's 22. Spencer also notched a career-high seven rebounds and five assists in the win while registering a +44 plus-minus. Chania Price added another 10 points, giving the Mean Green four total players in double figures.
UNT led 43-20 at the half before the offense really began to find its rhythm, putting up a 33-spot in the third quarter. Barber, a Hutchinson Community College transfer, tallied nearly half her total scoring of 19 with nine in the third frame alone.
All told, the Mean Green outscored the Jets by a 58-28 margin in the second half.
UNT now hits the road for the first time this season in their next matchup, heading west to face San Diego State. That game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CT on Thursday.
