TULSA, Okla. — The Mean Green soccer team had a very clear mission on Tuesday night in its regular-season finale.
Win, and win big, then hope some other American Conference results fall the way they needed.
Mission accomplished.
The Mean Green stormed out to a three-goal lead over Tulsa before winning 4-1, and that coupled with East Carolina's 2-1 loss to South Florida meant UNT (6-6-6, 2-3-5) qualified for the American Conference Championships as the 8-seed.
UNT will face regular-season champion Memphis (11-3-3, 8-0-2) on Sunday night at 6:30 p.m., in the opening round of the tournament in Lakewood Ranch, Florida. UNT and Memphis played to a 1-1 draw in Denton back on October 25.
"I said a few weeks ago don't give up on us, and I meant it!" said legendary head coach John Hedlund, who will retire following this season — his 32nd at the helm of the program he started. "We're peaking at the right time. The girls are playing with so much confidence and for each other— it's truly pretty to watch. Beating a team like Tulsa, 4-1, on their home field takes a complete team effort and everyone bringing their A-game, and that's what we did tonight. We're all excited for the conference tournament!"
On Tuesday, UNT came out firing early and often and took a 3-0 halftime lead after goals from Mia Bernard, Lillian Vandiver and Rydlii Rives. In the 69th minute, junior forward Claire Niedermeier scored her conference-leading 14th goal of the season to extend the lead to 4-0.
Bernard added two assists on the night, while Mya Mitchell also had a pair of assists. Niedermeier assisted on Bernard's 11th-minute goal. Bernard now leads the team with six assists on the season.
Goalkeeper Sarah Margaret Seabrook had four saves on the night as she kept a clean sheet until the 79th minute when she allowed the lone Tulsa goal of the night.
