Freshman Batsukh wins both singles matches to highlight doubleheader sweep for UNT
DENTON, Texas – The UNT tennis team picked up a pair of victories Wednesday, taking down Oral Roberts 4-0 before defeating Butler 4-1 to push its home winning streak to five consecutive matches.
The Mean Green (11-5) won both doubles points and won six of the seven decided singles matches on the day as they have now won eight of their last nine matches dating back to Feb. 16th.
"Today was a day of battling through the elements and we did a great job keeping our composure and getting the work done," head coach Amanda Stone said. "We could have easily given in to the frustration of the rain delay this morning but the team stayed focused and got a dominant win against ORU. Later we battled crazy high winds and Butler. In tennis the wind is always a great equalizer and we really had to keep our discipline and stay calm when shots weren't going our way. I'm proud of the way the team handled themselves in what could have been a long, frustrating day. I love how we continue to embrace challenges and grow."
In the opening match of the day against ORU, UNT won the doubles point in a big way with 6-3 wins from Lilly Schultz and Lou Chalard at line one and Carolina Laydner and Pia Petelinsek at line three to move ahead 1-0.
Then in singles action, the Mean Green were dominant with wins in the opening set at all six lines.
Playing at line one, Chalard picked up the first victory for UNT with a strong 6-2, 6-0 win to push the lead to 2-0.
Ujin Batsukh, who has excelled at line six all season, won yet ahead in her match 6-0, 6-2 and made the advantage 3-0 in favor of North Texas.
Moments later, Petelinsek iced the match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at line four to give the Mean Green the 4-0 sweep.
Elsewhere in singles, Laydner led her match at line two 6-4, 4-0, Marina Adati led at line three 6-1, 2-5 and Giuliana Ciangherotti led at line five 6-2, 3-4.
Against Butler, the same doubles teams came through once again with Chalard and Schultz picking up a 6-1 win at line one while Laydner and Petelinsek also won 6-1 at line three.
In doubles action, Schultz and Chalard are now 8-3 at line one doubles this season.
Ahead 1-0, Laydner was the first to clinch her singles match against the Bulldogs with a strong 6-0, 6-4 victory at line one to push the Mean Green lead to 2-0.
After Butler won its lone match of the day at line three, North Texas responded in a big way with straight set wins at lines five and six to take the match.
At line five, Giuliana Ciangherotti continued her winning ways with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. She is now 5-2 when playing at line five this season.
Then at line six, Batsukh became the only UNT player on the day to clinch singles wins in both matches with a strong 6-3, 7-5 victory. The freshman from Mongolia is now 7-2 this season with all nine decisions coming at line six.
