UNT heads into conference tournament with 16 dual victories, the most since 2013
STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The UNT tennis team got its second win in as many days and closed the regular season with a 4-1 victory over Tarleton State Friday on the road at the Tarleton Tennis Center.
The Mean Green won the doubles point for the 10th consecutive match and got singles wins at lines one, two and six to improve to 16-7 overall this season. The 16 wins for UNT is the most since 2013 when the Mean Green finished 18-6 and won the Sun Belt Conference title.
With the win, North Texas will head into the American Conference tournament going 12-3 in its final 15 regular season matches.
"We showed up today as a team and really battled on every line," head coach Amanda Stone said. "It took that toughness, grit and effort from everyone to pull through today. It really was a complete performance to finish a special regular season. To see our players competing with determination and fire again and again this season when things get tough is incredibly rewarding. Huge credit to every player on our team for believing, competing and digging deep all season long. And we're not done yet."
As they have for the last 10 matches, the Mean Green won the doubles point to move ahead 1-0.
Lilly Schultz and Lou Chalard started things off with a dominant 6-0 win at line one. Schultz and Chalard are now 14-4 as a pair in dual matches this season, most wins by a line one doubles team since Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze won 17 in the 2017 season.
Pia Petelinsek and Carolina Laydner then clinched the doubles point for UNT with a 6-2 victory at line three to improve to 9-2 as a duo and 7-1 at line three this season.
At the top two lines, Laydner and Chalard gave UNT two of its four points for the second consecutive match as they both won in straight sets at their respective lines.
Playing at line two, Chalard was the first to win with a strong 6-3, 6-3 victory. She is now 10-5 overall and 7-3 playing at line two in singles contests this season.
After Tarleton picked up a win at line three to cut the deficit to 2-1, Laydner pushed the edge back to two with a 6-1, 7-5 victory. It was Laydner's 14th singles win of the season and her 10th at line one. She became just the 11th player in program history to reach double-digit line one victories in a single season.
Giuliana Ciangherotti then closed things out for UNT at line six with a 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) win for her second straight match-clinching win. The freshman is now 9-6 overall this season.
North Texas will now turn its attention to the American Conference Championship in Houston hosted by Rice next weekend starting on April 16. Seeding for the tournament is determined based off ITA team rankings and will be announced next week.
