CHICAGO – UNT women's basketball forward Megan Nestor has signed a rookie scale contract with the Chicago Sky, it was announced today.
After producing one of the most dominant seasons in program history, Nestor now has the opportunity to secure a spot on the Chicago roster when training camp begins this Sunday. The WNBA regular season then opens nearly three weeks later on May 8.
Nestor started all 33 games for the Mean Green this past season, averaging 12.8 points and 14.1 rebounds per game. She led the NCAA with 464 rebounds, which also broke the UNT and American Conference single-season rebounding records, and was the country's only player with six different 20-rebound games. Her 21 double doubles ranked top 10 in the country and were highlighted by a historic 34-point, 31-rebound performance against Texas Southern on Dec. 6. It was just the third 30-30 game in the NCAA since at least 1981-82 and tied the most rebounds in a single game since 2006.
Some of Nestor's other notable outings included 28 rebounds against Tulane and a 19-point, 27-board double double versus Tulsa. Her efforts were also felt on the defensive end, swiping a team-high 49 steals and blocking 19 shots throughout the year.
Following the regular season, Nestor was named American Conference Defensive Player of the Year and selected to the All-Conference First Team, All-Defensive Team and All-Newcomer Team. She was just the second UNT player to ever win a conference Defensive Player of the Year award.
