Mean Green fall 4-1 against host and #3 seed Rice
HOUSTON – A historic season that saw UNT tennis win 17 matches for the first time since 2013 came to an end with a 4-1 loss at the hands of #3 Rice in the quarterfinal of the American Conference Championship Friday at George R. Brown Tennis Center.
The Mean Green close the season 17-8 overall finishing one win shy of the most wins in the modern era set in both 2012 and 2013. This was also the first season UNT has advanced to the quarterfinal of the American Conference Championship since joining the league in 2023-24.
"The team did today what we've done all year long: battled," head coach Amanda Stone said. "We fell short but not in effort, grit and heart. This team is really special and the season they put together this year reflects that. The growth, the development and the success this season are 100 percent credit to the players who held the standard, did the work and believed in each other day in and day out. Today proved again that there is no gap only inches separating us from the top teams in the nation. Mean Green tennis is far from done."
The Owls won the doubles point and picked up wins at lines two, three, and five to win the match. With the win, Rice improves to 15-6 overall and advances to face off against #2 Charlotte in the semifinal.
Freshman Giuliana Ciangherotti was able pick up a victory for the Mean Green at line six 6-2, 6-3 to avoid the sweep for UNT. She closes her first season in Denton with an 11-6 record in singles play while going 5-2 when playing at line six.
Junior Carolina Laydner did not complete her match at line one and will close her season 15-3 overall and 11-2 at line one. Her name will be etched in the record books as she finishes the season with the seventh-most single-season line one wins in program history and the best overall single-season win percentage (.833) and line one win percentage (.846) in program history.
North Texas will now set its sights on the 2026-27 season where they are set to return seven of eight players from the 2025-26 roster.
