Junior from Brazil becomes first player in program history to earn league honors from the American
DENTON, Texas – After a stellar regular season that saw numerous program records fall, junior tennis player Carolina Laydner was recognized for her efforts by being named an All-Conference selection by the American, the league announced Tuesday.
Laydner becomes the first student-athlete in program history to be recognized as an All-Conference player since UNT joined the league in the 2023-24 academic year. She was also one of just five players in the conference to earn unanimous selection to the team by the coaches.
"I'm so proud of Carolina. She's absolutely deserves it," head coach Amanda Stone said. "This honor is not only a reflection of Carolina's hard work but the team as well. As a coach you always want your top players setting the tone as leaders. This year that's exactly what we have in our upperclassmen. Carolina has been a tremendous captain and leader on and off the court all year, and to be recognized by every coach in the conference for her effort and success this season is awesome."
This season, Laydner has posted an impressive 15-3 overall record while going 11-2 at line one and 4-1 at line two. Her .833 overall win percentage as well as her .846 win percentage at line one are both single season program records.
In addition, Laydner also posted 13 victories in doubles this season with a 6-3 mark at line two and a 7-5 record at line three. One of the most consistent options in the American, Laydner played in both singles and doubles in every match for North Texas this season.
Her efforts on the court helped UNT win 17 total matches on the year, the most of any team since 2013 as well as setting a program record with 12 home victories.
It is Laydner's second honor from the conference this season after being named American Conference Player of the Week on April 21 for her remarkable play leading into postseason play.
