Ed Stewart Named Fred McCain Award Winner

Stewart honored for efforts to advance athletic department in major ways
DENTON, Texas – The UNT Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2026 added another member Wednesday when it was announced that UNT Alum and passionate Mean Green supporter Ed Stewart has received the McCain Award.
Stewart graduated from UNT with a bachelor's degree in 1953 and earned his master's from UNT in 1957. A native of Jacksoboro, Texas, Stewart passed away in June of 2015 and left a significant contribution to UNT athletics upon his death.
The McCain Award, named after the former athlete, coach and athletic director Fred McCain, began in 2012 to honor people whose contributions and efforts advance the athletic program in major ways.
Stewart was a large supporter of UNT athletics, holding season football tickets for more than 40 years and was a member of the Mean Green Club.
When he attended North Texas, he was member number two and one of the founding members of the Zeta Omicron Chapter of Sigma Nu.
Stewart became known as "Scrappy Ed" throughout the campus. He also adopted and cared for a live eagle. He also drove an antique Model T Ford, painted green and white with the eagle mascot painted on both doors, while on campus.
After graduation, he had a career as a teacher and owned and operated Ed's Clothes Shop in Jacksboro. After retiring, he assisted in managing the Stewart Family Ranch, his family's property. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge and active on the library and cemetery boards in Jacksboro.
