Chris Gilbert joined the UNT Football staff as assistant head coach and tight ends coach in December 2022.

Prior to North Texas, Gilbert spent two seasons as Director of High School Relations at Texas under head coach Steve Sarkisian. In that time, the Longhorns signed the top-rated class in the Big 12 and ranked inside the top five nationally both years.

He was also responsible for organizing appearances for head coach and staff members to present at events and clinics along with assisting the head coach and director of player personnel with roster management and prospect evaluation.

A graduate of South Oak Cliff High School, Gilbert had a long and successful history as a head coach in the Metroplex prior to transitioning to the college level. In 15 seasons as head coach, he posted a 121-58 record.

He most recently served as head football coach and athletic director at Lancaster from 2011-21 with an 89-36 record, the most in school history. In his final season in 2020, he led the Tigers to a 10-1 record and the area finals.

In Gilbert’s first season at the helm of the program, the Tigers won nine games for the first time since 1940 and then advanced to the state championship game in 2012 for the first time in school history on the back of a 14-win season. Those 14 wins were a Lancaster single-season record.

During his ten seasons at Lancaster, 90 student-athletes earned college scholarships.Â

Gilbert served as head coach at Terrell for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. In that time, he led the program to 13 wins and a playoff appearance. The Tigers had won only five games total in the three previous seasons before his arrival.

A 1999 graduate of Angelo State, Gilbert received his first head coaching duty at South Oak Cliff in 2006 and compiled a record of 20-15 in three seasons and led the Golden Bears to three straight playoff appearances. He also had stops as an assistant at Dallas Carter, Greenville, and Bryan.

Gilbert was honored as District Coach of the Year in 2007, 2009, 2012, 2016 and 2020. A longtime member of the THSCA, Gilbert previously served on the Region 3 Board of Directors.

Gilbert and his wife Belinda have two children, Krislyn and Christopher II.
