Dan Conwell was hired as a member of the UNT football staff in March of 2024. He serves as the assistant special teams coach.
In his first season with the Mean Green, the UNT special Teams units excelled. The combined six units ranked second in the American Conference according to Pro Football Focus (PFF) special teams’ grades. They were first in the American Athletic Conference for composite ranking average of special teams’ units.
The punt unit ranked second nationally by only allowing eight total return yards on 47 punts. The kickoff coverage unit ranked ninth nationally and led the AAC allowing only 16 yards per kickoff return. The punt return unit was one of the most explosive in the conference executing five returns of over 20 yards which was tied for second in The American. The Mean Green also led the conference with two blocked punts on the year and were successful on all of their PAT attempts (55 of 55) for the second consecutive season.
Conwell joins UNT after working for one season as a special teams quality control assistant at Mississippi State. In his one season with the Bulldogs, MSU finished third in the SEC and 17th in the country in kickoff return average and fourth in the SEC and 24th in DI in punt return average.
Prior to his time with the Bulldogs, Conwell spent one season as an assistant coach at DIII Whittenberg University in Ohio where he served as the safeties and cornerbacks coach as well as special teams. Wittenberg finished that season with the second-best rush defense and third-best pass defense in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
Conwell spent four seasons as a defensive graduate assistant at Kent State University from 2018-22. He also had stops as a quality control coach at Houston Baptist and was a student coach at his Alma Mater Bowling Green form 2014-17.
Conwell received his Master's degree in Sport Management from Kent State in 2021 and achieved his Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Management and Journalism from Bowling Green in 2017.
