Dave Fleming enters his second season as head coach of the UNT volleyball program after being hired on December 24, 2024. Prior to joining the Mean Green, Fleming spent two decades leading Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction, Colo.
Â
In Fleming’s first season at the helm, North Texas compiled a 21-8 overall record to reach 20 victories for the first time since 2017. That marked an 11-win improvement from the Mean Green’s previous season and the highest winning percentage (.700) by a first-year head coach in program history. Despite being voted 11th in the preseason American Conference coaches’ poll, Fleming also guided his squad to an 11-5 league record and a fourth-place finish in the regular season standings.
Â
Under Fleming’s guidance, middle blocker Loredana Fouonji put together a fantastic season that ultimately earned her Second Team All-Conference honors while setter Alexa Washington recorded four triple-doubles and was one of just nine NCAA players with 100+ kills, 600+ assists and 300+ digs.
Â
Fleming has won at least 20 matches in 10 different seasons throughout his career, including each of the past five. He was one of 10 first-year Division I head coaches to do so last year and reached the milestone mark of 400 career victories on Sept. 20, 2025, against Tarleton State.
Â
While at Colorado Mesa, Fleming went 390-184 (.679) over 20 seasons and holds the program record for career winning percentage. He tallied 258 conference victories and won four league championships, while the Mavericks were included in each AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll for the final 41 consecutive weeks of his tenure, a streak that dated back to Aug. 29, 2022.
Â
Fleming won four RMAC Coach of the Year awards and added AVCA South Central Region Coach of the Year honors in 2014. He coached 21 All-Americans and 80 All-Conference players, including three RMAC Player of the Year winners, three Setter of the Year honorees and three Freshman of the Year selections.
Â
Before taking the head job at CMU, Fleming was as an assistant coach for UCLA from 2001-04. With him on staff, the Bruins compiled a record of 86-43 and earned four bids to the NCAA Tournament with Elite Eight appearances in 2001, 2003 and 2004. Fleming worked under head coach Andy Banachowski, who ended his 43-year career with six national championships and 1,106 wins.
Â
From 1994-96, Fleming held an assistant coaching role for the USA Women’s National Team. He worked under head coach Terry Liskevych as the team helped host the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta after it won the nation’s first gold medal in a major competition at the 1995 FIVB World Grand Prix.
Â
He originally began his coaching career as a student assistant with the women’s team at Denison University, earning a bachelor’s degree in geology with a minor in physical education in 1992. There, Fleming played for and coached the men’s club volleyball team while also starting for the varsity tennis team.
Â
In 1994, Fleming graduated from the University of Michigan with a master’s degree in kinesiology. During his time in Ann Arbor, he worked as a volunteer assistant coach for the women’s team and played for the men’s club volleyball team.
Â
Following his stint with USA Volleyball, Fleming became the head coach at Valhalla High School in El Cajon, Calif., where he won coach of the year and a conference championship over two seasons. While in California, Fleming also worked as a club coach for San Diego Volleyball Club (1994-2001) and Sports Shack Volleyball Club (2001-04). In 2012, he was a founding member of Mesa Juniors Volleyball Company in Palisade, Colo., and served as President of the Board of Directors.
