Luke Calcatera enters his fourth season as the head men’s golf coach at North Texas after being hired on June 7, 2023. Previously, he led North Alabama to a resurgent 2022-23 campaign and spent over a decade building Arkansas Tech into a national powerhouse at the Division II level.
UNT has steadily improved each year under Calcatera’s watch. Most recently, his squad put together a productive 2025-26 season that saw it finish runner-up twice and top four in four different tournaments. Despite starting at least three underclassmen in every event, UNT completed the season ranked inside the top 100 for the first time since 2022.
The 2025-26 campaign also saw the emergence of true freshman Mitchell Maier, who was named American Conference Freshman of the Year and a member of the All-Conference team. A starter in all 11 tournaments, Maier led the team with a 72.67 stroke average, six top-20 performances, five rounds in the 60s, 122 birdies and six eagles. He was UNT’s highest placer six times and capped the season off with a third-place outing at the American Conference Championship, shooting a 12-under 204 to match the program’s best 54-hole score at a conference tournament.
In Calcatera’s second season, the Mean Green took third at the American Conference Championship for its highest league placement since 2021. That effort was propelled by a stellar 277 in the final round, which matched the program’s lowest 18-hole score in any postseason competition since at least 1994. Individually, standout freshman Blake Keen also claimed a share of fourth place to earn All-Conference honors.
North Texas won its first team tournament title since 2018 and shattered several program records during Calcatera’s debut season. It placed top three in half of its 10 tournaments throughout the year, while Calcatera coached Tucker Allen to a runner-up finish at the American Conference Championship and All-Conference recognition.
A native of Keller, Texas, Calcatera joined North Alabama for the 2022-23 season amid its transition to the Division I level. In one year there, he helped Francois Jacobs to All-ASUN honors and led the Lions to a 75-spot improvement in the Golfstat rankings, a league-leading three tournament wins and the program’s first victory over a top-20 opponent.
Calcatera found incredible success while working at his alma mater of Arkansas Tech, first as the men’s head coach from 2011-20 before being promoted to the school’s director of golf to oversee both the men’s and women’s programs. His time with the men’s team was highlighted by a NCAA Division II national championship in 2021, as well as nine consecutive postseason appearances, three Great American Conference championships and 10 top-three league finishes in a row. Under Calcatera, Arkansas Tech won 32 total tournaments and became the first Division II program in history to reach match play at five straight NCAA Championships.
In that span, Calcatera’s men’s golfers accumulated more than 30 All-Conference selections, four conference Player of the Year awards and six conference Freshman of the Year honorees alongside seven All-Americans in just the final four years of his tenure. As a result, he became the 2021 Division II National Coach of the Year, a six-time Great American Conference Coach of the Year, three-time Central Region Coach of the Year and 2022 Arnold Palmer Cup Head Coach finalist.
Following Calcatera’s promotion to director of golf in 2020, the Arkansas Tech women’s program captured a Great American Conference title in 2021 and reached the NCAA Championship in back-to-back seasons. He was named GAC Coach of the Year once on the women’s side and led the team to an appearance in NCAA Championship match play.
Calcatera played at Arkansas Tech and was a member of the 2004 squad that won the Gulf South Conference Championship and played in the NCAA Division II South Regional Tournament. He graduated from ATU in 2007 and 2013 and is now married to the former Ashley Duvall of Russellville, Ark. They have three children, Josephine, Luke Jr. and Dean.
