Volleyball Falls to UT Arlington in First Match at Texas Challenge

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The UNT volleyball team suffered a 3-1 (13-25, 18-25, 25-21, 24-26) defeat to UT Arlington in its first match of the Texas Challenge tournament on Thursday.
With the loss, North Texas dropped to 3-3 on the season.
UT Arlington took control of the match early, winning the first two sets by a combined score of 50-31. The Mean Green were able to find some momentum with a 25-21 third set victory, but it was ultimately not enough as the Mavericks bounced back to clinch the fourth in extra points. Despite strong performances from several Mean Green players, a .266 hitting percentage by UT Arlington compared to UNT's mark of .076 proved to be the deciding difference.
For the fifth time in six matches, Jahniya Jackson led the North Texas offense with 11 kills and three service aces, including a pair late in set three to clinch the game. She also added six digs and two blocks defensively. Meanwhile, middle blocker Addison Achilles continued her strong season through five blocks and nine kills on a .333 hitting percentage.
Outside hitter Jocelyn Jourdan also provided a positive push off the bench, securing five kills on seven swings alongside two blocks. At libero, Alessandra Romo compiled 21 digs, just two shy of her career-high, for her third 20-dig outing of the season.
North Texas quickly turns around to face tournament host Stephen F. Austin on Friday at 6 p.m. The match will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
