North Texas Men in Second Place After First Day

NEW ORLEANS, LA.- The North Texas men's track and field team is in second place after the first day of competition at the 2002 Sun Belt Conference Championship in New Orleans. The Mean Green, going after their second title in three years, have 51 points and trail the leader, Western Kentucky by two points.
North Texas was led by strong field performances by Ron Paris, Jerome Carrothers, and Adrian Awasom in discus and shot put. Awasom, competing in his first meet of the season, finished in third place in the discus with a toss of 160-1. In the shot put Jerome Carrothers finished in second place with a toss of 49-9.25 and Paris ended up in third with a throw of 49-0.75.
In the distance events Nick Mokashi had a strong outing finishing in second place in the 10,000 meters with a time of 32:19.17. In the running events North Texas was just as successful. David Turner qualified for the finals in the 200 meter dash and 400 meter dash. Three athletes, Quentin Arnold, Michael Krebs, and Brian Stephenson qualified in the 800 meter dash.
On the women's side the Lady Eagles sit in fifth place overall with 29.5 points. New Mexico State leads the way with 61 points. Rhatisha Scott captured the heptathlon by scoring 4,695 points. Jessica Shockley won the high jump with a height of 5-4.50. In the running events Ananka Clark blazed her way into the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash finals with season best times. In the 100 meters Clark improved on her own school record time with a mark of 11.62, which is also just .07 off the NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 11.55. Other qualifiers include Stephanie Allen and Lisa Helm, who finished first and second respectively in the 400 meter hurdles.
The Sun Belt Conference Championship will concludes tomorrow night.
