North Texas Track And Field Athlete Gentry Passes Away

DENTON (4/9/04) - North Texas track and field athlete LaKisha Gentry passed away on Friday afternoon from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident last weekend in Fort Worth . Gentry, a junior from Denison , passed away at 12:15 p.m. with her family at her side at Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth .
“In the very short time that Kisha was with us she touched many lives and became a part of the North Texas family,” said North Texas athletic director Rick Villarreal. “We have suffered a great loss and we grieve along with all of her family and friends”.
The junior was one of the most accomplished athletes on the North Texas team. Gentry won the Sun Belt Conference javelin championship as a sophomore with a throw of 41.85 meters. She was one of eight North Texas athletes who qualified for the NCAA Regional in 2003.
In the shot put, she had the third best throw for North Texas last season. As a freshman Gentry finished third in the javelin at the Sun Belt Conference Championship and had the best throw of the season for North Texas in 2002.
The wake for Gentry will take place on Friday, April 16 from 7 to 8 pm. Gentry's funeral is scheduled for Saturday, April 17 at 12 pm. Both services will take place at Trinity Lighthouse. The address is 2915 Spur 503 in Denison.
