Top Ten Finishes Propel Mean Green Cross Country

DENTON (9/11/04) - Behind strong performances from newcomer Frank Ngeno and senior Matt Gieringer, the Mean Green Men's Cross Country team notched a second place finish at the third annual Mean Green Opener held at the Eagle Point Campus.
Ngeno led the Mean Green with a fifth place finish in the 8k run with a time of 26:18. He was followed closely by Gieringer, who turned in the seventh place time of 26:40.
"It was good to get the first real meet under out belt. We knew it was going to be tough, because we were running against some tough competition," said head coach Rick Watkins. "I was really impressed with some of our newcomers."
Justin Kauffman just missed the top ten, notching a 12th place finish with a time of 27:25. Jose Zubia finished just behind Kauffman in 17th place with a time of 27:49.
Sean Covington ran a 28:02 for 21st place, and Josh Rogers finished 23rd with a time of 28:25.

On the women's side, Jill Brennan and Bonnie McKernan finished 13th and 14th to anchor a fourth place finish for the Mean Green Women's team.

"This was as tough a field as the women will see this year," said Watkins. "Still, I am very happy with the effort I got from the team."
Michelle Hurn and Dagmar Salazar also finished back to back, earning 25th and 26th place with times of
