North Texas 2005 Football Schedule Announced

DENTON, Texas- The University of North Texas has announced its 2005 football schedule, which is highlighted by five home games and the renewal of regional matchups with Tulsa and Louisiana-Tech. The Mean Green will also play a seven-game Sun Belt Conference schedule, which will include games against new members Florida International and Florida Atlantic.

North Texas begins the 2005 season against Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La. LSU won the 2003 national championship and finished second in the Southeastern Conference’s West division in 2004. The Tigers have won the only two meetings with North Texas, including a 52-0 win in 1999, which was Dickey’s second year with the Mean Green.

On Sept. 17, North Texas and Tulsa will renew a rivalry that has a long and storied tradition. The two teams first met in 1957 and played as Missouri Valley Conference opponents until 1975 when North Texas moved out of the conference to play as an independent. The last meeting between the teams came at Fouts field in 1982 with the Golden Hurricane winning 38-20.

Dickey will return to his alma mater on Sept. 24 as the Mean Green travels to Manhattan, Kan. to take on Kansas State. Dickey played quarterback for the Wildcats from 1979-82, leading the school to its first-ever bowl game in 1982. This will be Dickey’s second trip to Kansas State as the Mean Green’s head coach, following a loss to the Wildcats in 2000.

The Mean Green will also renew a rivalry with a former conference foe when it plays at Louisiana Tech on Oct. 22. The two teams played as members of the Southland Conference until 1987 when the Bulldogs left the conference to play as an independent.

“We have made a concerted effort to include games with a regional interest on our future schedules,” Athletic Director Rick Villarreal said. “There is a definite appeal to our fans in playing teams within the same geographic area and this year begins what we hope will be a long relationship with teams such as Tulsa and Louisiana Tech.”

North Texas will play Sun Belt home games against Troy, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana-Lafayette and Arkansas State. Troy finished second in the Sun Belt standings in 2004 and played in the school’s first-ever bowl game. The Mean Green goes on the road for conference games against Middle Tennessee, Florida International and Florida Atlantic. Due to scheduling conflicts with every Sun Belt team trying to accommodate the two new league members, North Texas and Middle Tennessee were forced to move their game to Sept. 10.

North Texas finished 7-0 in conference play and 7-5 overall in 2004. Season tickets are now on sale through the North Texas ticket office at (940) 565-2527.
