Arlington, TX (5/07/05) - Ciji Brooks anchored the North Texas track and field team by setting the school record in the 100-meter hurdles in blustery conditions at the UTA Open.
The junior ran a career best 13.74, qualifying her for the NCAA Regional Meet in Norman, Okla. Brooks now holds three of the five fastest 100-hurdles times and the top-two shot put throws in school history.
Brooks qualified for regionals in the shot put earlier this season, which makes her the sixth Mean Green athlete to qualify in two events. Rachael Runnels (200, 4x100), Deidra Wesley (high jump, heptathlon), Kory Williams (400-hurdles, 4x400), David Schwein (4x100, 4x400) and Derek Logan (4x100, 4x400) have double qualified.
"We had a great day on the track," said Mean Green head coach Rick Watkins. "It was a windy day, but everyone did well despite the conditions."
Stacy Orakpo also fared well at the meet, finishing second in the shot put. The sophomore's toss of 13.57-meters is one of her best of the season.
The UTA Open was the final tune-up meet of the season. Next week the Mean Green will head to
