Track Freshman Earns Sun Belt Performer Of The Week

DENTON (2/14/06) Brandi Stanfield received a valentine from the Sun Belt on Tuesday, as the freshman was named the Conference’s Female Field Performer of the Week.

Stanfield put up the nation’s eleventh-best triple jump of the season at the ISU Classic on Saturday. The freshman, in just her second collegiate attempt, leaped 42-feet-6.75-inches, shattering the school record by well over a foot and setting the Sun Belt’s top mark by over two.

The jump provisionally qualifies Stanfield for the NCAA Indoor Championships. She would be the first Mean Green athlete to participate in the indoor NCAA’s.

This is the second week in a row that a North Texas athlete has been selected to this honor. Deidra Wesley scored 3,668 points in the pentathlon at the J.D. Martin Invitational on Feb. 4, just 11 shy of her own school record. In the process, Wesley set a new high jump mark with a leap of 5-feet-8.75-inches.

The Mean Green will be in Norman, Okla. this weekend for the Sooner Indoor Meet.
