Track's Wesley Sidelined At Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas (4/06/06) - Deidra Wesley’s bid to topple her own North Texas heptathlon record at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays was cut short due to injury on Thursday.

The senior injured her elbow attempting a javelin throw, the fifth of seven heptathlon events, and was forced to withdraw. Wesley, who earned 3,138 points after four events on Wednesday, was on pace to shatter her own school record of 5,030 points set at last year’s Texas Relays.

Wesley is unlikely to return to competition at the Texas Relays, but will have another chance this season to reach the 5,000 point provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA National Championships.

Yesterday, the Sherman, Texas native broke the school high jump record she set on the first day of competition at the 2005 Texas Relays. Wesley won Wednesday’s event with a jump of 5-feet-10-inches, tied for the 11th best leap in the nation this year. The mark qualified her for the NCAA Midwest Regional Meet for the fourth consecutive season.

While Wesley’s week at the nation’s top meet comes to an end, All-American Brandi Stanfield’s is just beginning. The freshman is returning home for her first collegiate outdoor meet, where the Austin native will participate in the long jump and the triple jump tomorrow on the track she competed several times in high school.

Stanfield had a stellar indoor campaign, earning Sun Belt Conference Women’s Field Performer of the Year as well as Freshman of the Year honors. The triple jumper recorded a leap of 43-feet-5-1/4-inches, the ninth best in the nation in 2006.
