Smith Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American

DENTON (6/20/06) North Texas track and field standout Heath Smith was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Second Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The junior, who owns the team’s top GPA, broke the school javelin record for a third time this season at the 2006 NCAA Midwest Regional Track Meet, finishing eighth with a toss of 202-feet-9-inches.
Smith not only won the Sun Belt Conference javelin title in May, but he also finished second in the shot put. The criminal justice major now owns four of the top five javelin marks in school history.
Smith has the program’s top javelin and hammer throw in each of the last two seasons, to go with three straight in the shot put. His 15 top-five finishes in 2006, including five victories, tops all Mean Green athletes.
To be nominated for the Academic All-America team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore starter or significant reserve on his team with a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. District VI, where Smith was a first-team selection, represents student-athletes in the states of
