DENTON The Sun Belt Conference announced Wednesday that three members of the Mean Green were named Performer of the Week after their efforts Saturday at the Sooner Indoor.
Fernanda Mackenna, Alana Tyler and Terry Lewis were all honored after exceptional performances in Norman, Okla. in the year’s final tuneup before the conference championships next week in Jonesboro, Ark.
Mackenna continues to be one of the more impressive in an overall impressive group of freshman sprinters the Mean Green has. She claimed her first career win on Saturday when she took first place in a time of 55.76 seconds in the 400-meter dash at the Sooner Indoor. The Santiago, Chile, native missed out on the school record in the event by only .21 seconds in only her second try this season in the event.
Tyler has had an interesting run in the weight throw in 2007. After setting the North Texas record in the weight throw in ’06 as a freshman, her record was broken in the season’s first meet; however, that only seemed to serve as motivation for her as she reclaimed the record the following week and went on to better that mark on Saturday at the Sooner Indoor with a toss of 55-10.25 and claiming second at the meet. That mark also stands as the third-best throw of the season for anyone in the Sun Belt. She also competed in the shot put where she threw a season best of 41-05.25.
A transfer from McNeese State, Lewis continues to be consistent in a number of events. Lewis put up the season’s fastest times for North Texas in both the 60-meter hurdles and the 400-meter dash on Saturday at the Sooner Indoor. He finished fourth in the 400 in a time of 50.10 seconds in his first attempt of the season at the event. He also tried his hand once again at the 60-meter hurdles and took fifth place, putting up his team-best time of 8.13 seconds in the preliminary heat.
The Mean Green will open the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships beginning Saturday at the Convocation Center in Jonesboro.
