DENTON After an indoor season and an outdoor season exclusively on the road, the Mean Green track and field team will get to stay at home this weekend when it hosts the North Texas Classic at Fouts Field.

North Texas will be joined by teams from Baylor, UT-Arlington, TCU, Arkansas-Little Rock,Dallas Baptist, McMurry, Northwood, Oklahoma Baptist, Paul Quinn College, Southwest Christian, and Texas A&M Commerce. In addition, four Olympic medalists from the 2004 Athens games are scheduled to compete at Fouts Field.

Jeremy Wariner will headline the group as the former Baylor standout and Arlignton Lamar High School graduate is scheduled to compete in the 200 meters. Joining him with their own Olympic medals on Saturday are scheduled to be his former teammate Darold Williamson, former Texas Longhorn Sanya Richards, and thrower Alex Tammert. Both Williamson and Richards claimed gold medals as members of the 4x400 relay teams in 2004, while Tammert claimed a bronze medal in the discus.

As for the Mean Green, it is coming off a difficult weekend at the Texas Relays that was handicapped all weekend by unseasonal weather that swept through the Lone Star State.

But in previous competitions North Texas has already made its mark on the NCAA Midwest Region meet as three qualifying marks have been met up to this point in two throwing events and a relay.

The Arlington Invitational was good to the Mean Green as senior thrower Heath Smith broke the school record in the javelin with a toss of 205’8”. In the process he punched his ticket to the regional meet for the second consecutive season. Another senior, Heather Wood, also passed the mark in the women’s shot in Arlington by throwing 47’7.25”. That mark currently stands as the second-best throw in the Sun Belt this season.

The final qualifying mark eclipsed by the Mean Green was in the 4x400 relay that checked in at a Sun Belt best 45.67, just under the regional qualifying mark of 45.70.

Sophomore jumper Brandi Stanfield just missed out on qualifying this past weekend in Austin when she fell just .02 meters shy of the mark in the long jump at the Texas Relays. Stanfield qualified for the Regional meet in the long jump and the NCAA Championships in the triple jump in 2006. She has still yet to attempt a triple jump in 2007.

Field events are scheduled to start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with running events to begin at 1 p.m. with the 3000-meter steeplechase.
