Mean Green Wraps Up Regular Season At SBC Outdoors

The Mean Green still walked away with three gold medals as Brandi Stanfield, Heath Smith and the women’s 4x400 relay will each head to the regional meet with Sun Belt gold around their necks. Smith captured his second consecutive gold in the javelin by blowing away his mark from a year ago. His school-record toss 64.09 meters was more than enough to take the title away from Norman Austin of
Stanfield claimed her first career outdoor conference title on Sunday in the triple jump after taking first in the triple jump and long jump in each of the last two SBC Indoor meets. Stanfield, who advanced all the way to the NCAA Championships last season in the triple jump, flew 13.09 meters in her final attempt to get past India George of Florida International.
The 4x400 relay team barely crossed the line ahead of
Smith and Stanfield have already qualified for the NCAA Midwest Regional meet in
Toby Edwards pulled off an impressive feat in the high jump as well. The Athens, Tex., sophomore took second with a school-record heighth of 2.15 meters (7'00.5 feet). Edwards is the first Mean Green high jumper to clear seven feet since Stoney Marquis in 1996, and only the fifth all time.
Wiggins took third place in the 100-meter hurdles in a school-record time of 13.68 seconds after posting the second-fastest time in qualifying for the finals. Varner will make an appearance in the 200-meter dash after a blazing 21.08 second run in the finals, just missing out on the medal stand in fourth place.
