Edwards Clears 7-Foot Mark, Leads NT At Twilight Invitational

DENTON, Texas (4/24/08) The University of North Texas track and field team tallied a season-high five regional qualifying marks and 13 season-best at the Mean Green Twilight Invitational Thursday night at Fouts Field.

Leading the way for North Texas was junior high jumper Toby Edwards. Edwards tied his own school record as he cleared 7-00.50 on his third and final attempt to take home first place in the high jump. It is the second time in as many years Edwards has cleared the seven-foot mark. Edwards’ marks currently ranks fourth in the NCAA Midwest Region.

“It’s a huge accomplishment for Toby,” said head coach Rick Watkins. “He continues to get better and better with every meet. We’re going to depend on him heavily at the Sun Belt Championships, so it’s good to see him peaking at the right time.”

In all, North Texas won nine events at the fourth annual Mean Green Twilight. Byron Washington was the top collegiate finisher in the 100-meter dash with a regional qualifying time of 10.47. The mark of 10.47 is the second-fastest this season in the Sun Belt.

Three Mean Green women tracksters posted regional qualifying marks. Alysha Adams edged out Julie Pickler and teammate Lauren Wiggins for a first place finish in the 100-meter hurdles. Adams, a freshman from Houston, Texas, clocked in with a time of 13.53; just one-hundredth of a second off the school record set by Wiggins last weekend at the TCU Invitational.

Brandi Stanfield tallied a season-best leap of 20-04.25 to take home top honors in the women’s long jump. Stanfield, who had already regionally qualified in the long jump, improved her previous qualifying mark by five inches.

“It’s encouraging to see that we are continuing to post numerous qualifying marks every meet,” Watkins said. “It’s even better to see that a lot of our athletes qualifying are amongst the top 10 in the region.”

The UTA Open will be the next stop for the University of North Texas track and field team next Saturday.
