One month into the season it's safe to say that the North Texas men's golf team is a top-20 team. And now the polls have confirmed it. The Mean Green is ranked No. 20 in the nation by both Golfstat and Golfweek's newest top-25 polls.
The Mean Green actually fell 10 spots in the Golfstat rankings, which is more computer based, and uses a variety of formulas to rank teams. Think BCS, only smarter.
In the Golfweek poll North Texas actually moved up four spots to No. 20 after opening the year ranked at No. 24.
The second place finish in New Mexico didn't hurt things as North Texas lost to only San Diego State by one stroke, and beat the then No. 1 in the nation Pepperdine by 11 strokes.
Interestingly in both polls, there are only five teams from non-BCS schools ranked in the top-25, North Texas being one of them.
Individually speaking Carlos Ortiz has cracked the top-100 as he is ranked as the 98th best player in the nation. Josh Jones is the 135th ranked player in the country after his fiery start to the year with two-top-10's.
The Mean Green has just one more tourney this fall before calling it quits until the spring. The field at the Lone Star Invite isn't good, sans Houston and Notre Dame, so if North Texas can win that tournament their top-20 ranking should last a while.
As the year wears on, fluky wins become discounted and the legitimate strength of your team shows, and so far North Texas has shown it's a top-20 squad.
