DENTON, Texas (12/2/10) - Five Mean Green players scored in double figures to lead the North Texas men's basketball team to an 89-78 win against Grambling State on Thursday night at the Super Pit.
The Mean Green improves to 6-1, the best start for a North Texas team since the 1977-78 season. North Texas won its 10th straight game at home, becoming only the sixth team in program history to secure a double-digit home win streak. Grambling fell to 1-6 overall.
North Texas hit its first nine field goals and never looked back. The Mean Green led by as many as 16 points in the first half and extended its lead to as many as 18 in the second period. Grambling State cut into the Mean Green lead several times, but North Texas quickly pushed the advantage back to double-digits.
Thompson led the Mean Green with 28 points, one point shy of his career high that he set last game against UTA. The senior guard has scored 23 or more points in six of his last eight games. He was 5-of-6 from three-point range and 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. He has hit at least four three-pointers in his last three games and has scored in double figures in every game this season.
George Odufuwa recorded his 21st career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Tonight's performance was his fourth double-double of the season. Kedrick Hogans scored in double-figures for the third time this season with 13 points, two shy of tying a career high. Josh White and Dominique Johnson also scored in double-digits with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Thompson started tonight's game the same way he has started the last two: hitting three-pointers. He hit his first three-pointer two minutes into the game and his second at 16:36 for an early 13-4 Mean Green lead.
The Mean Green was a perfect 9-for-9 from field-goal range to open the game with a 21-8 advantage. Backed by Thompson's 16 points, North Texas shot 64 percent in the first half, en route to a 46-35 lead at the intermission.
With the Mean Green ahead by 15 points, 31-16, Grambling State rattled off a 14-5 run to cut the lead to six points at 5:06. North Texas responded with a 10-5 run going into half with five of those points coming from Thompson.
At the start of the second half, Grambling used another 14-5 run cut the lead to four points, 58-54, with a dunk by Justin Patton at 12:29. Thompson scored six of the Mean Green's next 10 points to get back to a 10-point lead.
Patton led Grambling State with 26 points.
North Texas returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 4 when it faces Texas Southern on the road.
