DENTON, Texas- North Texas men's basketball increased its home winning streak to 17 games as the Mean Green knocked off the Arkansas State Red Wolves 83-64 at the Super Pit. Dominique Johnson tied a career high with 21 points and George Odufuwa tied a season-high with 16 rebounds.
Dominique Johnson led the Mean Green by tying his career-high with 21 points. Johnson went a perfect 6-6 from the floor and 4-4 from beyond the arc before missing his first shot. On the night, Johnson went 5-5 beyond the arc and 7-8 from the field.
The Mean Green jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the game, marking the second straight game that North Texas scored at least eight points before the opponent got on the board. Dominique Johnson hit a 35-foot shot to beat the first half buzzer to give the Mean Green a 46-24 lead entering the break. The victory marks the 30th straight game that the Mean Green have held on to a halftime lead. North Texas held on to the lead for the entire contest.
George Odufuwa's 16 rebounds match his highest output of the season, set on November 23 against Rice, and he now has double digit rebounds in four of his last five games. Odufuwa notched his 9th double-double of the season with 14 points.
Josh White's 15 points moved him past Tony Worrell into 6th place on North Texas' career scoring list. White has 1,525 points for his career. White set a season-high with six assists, which moved him past Kevie Gulley and Chris Davis into 3rd on North Texas' career assist list.
Tristan Thompson scored 16 points, giving him double figures in nine straight games. Thompson went 11-12 from the charity stripe, and now has four games with 10 or more free throws made.
The Mean Green improve to 16-4 on the season and 5-2 within Sun Belt play. Arkansas State falls to 10-12 and 4-4 within the league.
North Texas now embarks on a two-game road trip, taking on Louisiana-Lafayette on Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. before heading to Denver for a Jan. 29 tilt at 5 p.m. The Mean Green return home to the Super Pit to face Sun Belt-leading FAU on Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. All games will be broadcast on 100.7 FM KWRD.
