HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Seniors George Odufuwa and Dominique Johnson led the Mean Green to its fifth straight 20 win season with an 83-69 victory over Troy in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Saturday night at Summit Arena.
Odufuwa turned in huge numbers for North Texas (20-10, 8-8), scoring 17 points with 13 rebounds and a career high 6 assists. His six assists ties the school record for most assists in a Sun Belt Tournament game while the 13 boards were fourth most all-time in tournament play.
Johnson came off the bench for the Mean Green early in the first half after Josh White picked up two quick fouls and poured in 14 points in the first half alone.He went 5-of-6 from the field with four trey's, one of which came at the end of the first half and gave North Texas a 43-38 lead going into the break.
The Mean Green pulled away in the second half, holding the Trojans to 37 percent shooting and a mere 1-for-12 from behind the arc. Five North Texas players scored in double figures for the second time against Troy and sixth this season, led by Johnson's 18.
Bernard Toombs took the lead for the Trojans with 12 points and 12 rebounds in 28 minutes of play.
The Mean Green have now won six of it's last seven games at the SBC Championship and have made it to the quarterfinal or further in five straight seasons.
The Mean Green will continue its run to back-to-back Sun Belt Conference Tournament titles Sunday evening at 6:45 p.m. when it takes on No. 1 overall seed FAU on the Convention Center Court.
