No. 48- Cody Spencer, One Tough Linebacker

One of the most athletic linebackers, Cody Spencer was a key cog to the run of the first three New Orleans Bowls from 2001-03. Spencer was a three-time all-conference player from 2001-03. Spencer arrived on campus in 2000 but was one of the best linebackers in the Sun Belt Conference during his time.

After only five tackles his freshman year in 2000, Spencer busted onto the scene in 2001, starting 11 games and finishing with 105 tackles as the Mean Green captured the 2001 Sun Belt Conference title.

Paired with Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year Brad Kassell that year, the Mean Green rose up from an 0-5 start to win the league. In 2002, despite missing four games to injury, he was named to the first-team all-conference and he had one of five interceptions in the North Texas victory over Cincinnati in the New Orleans Bowl.

In 2003 Spencer led North Texas in tackles in seven games on his way to 121 for the year. In all, Spencer finished his career with 292 total tackles. He led the Mean Green in tackles in 2001 and 2003 and a first-team all-conference pick in 2003. Spencer was drafted in 2004 by the Oakland Raiders in 2004 in the sixth round.
