No. 23 - Reverend Maher Dominates The Southland Conference
Of the thousands packed into Fouts Field to watch Mitch Maher dominate the Southland Conference back in 1994, only a handful had any clue what his next career move would be. Then again, I’m sure the good folks at Redeemer Community Church in Katy, Texas have a hard time believing that Senior Pastor Maher used to be a Hall-of-Fame caliber QB.
Maher took the term “student-athlete” to another level, leading his Mean Green to the 1994 Southland Conference title all while planning his career in ministry. He threw for a school-record 3,103 yards and 26 touchdowns and promptly took his studies to the Dallas Theological Seminary after receiving his North Texas diploma the next spring.
Boasting the No. 23 jersey, Maher’s athletic career led him to wins over some of the top Division I-AA programs in the country. His ministries have taken him even farther.
To this day, Maher still holds NT’s single season and career passing yards records, as well as the career marks for attempts and completions. His 23 200-yard passing performances (including 10 in a row in 1994) are three more than any other player in program history.
