No. 21 - Theron J. Fouts Comes To Denton
1920 North Texas made a hire that would change the face of athletics for decades to come. Theron J. Fouts was hired that year. Fouts had served as a coach at Sam Marcos (Texas State) and Burleson before arriving in Denton.
His athletic career in the Southwest Conference is impeccable. He lettered in three different sports, football, basketball, and baseball at Baylor. His legacy at North Texas began that year. He went onto coach for five seasons, winning 23 games as the football coach.
Fouts also coached the men's basketball team in 1920-21, winning five games that year in his only season as the coach.
He moved into an administrative role and his greatest project was the building of what would eventually be named in his honor, Fouts Field.
His legacy and impact continues at the school 91 years after he was first hired.
