DENTON, Texas (9/30/12) - Five different players scored for North Texas to help the Mean Green take down the Troy Trojans 5-1 on Sunday afternoon.
"I love (having five different players score)," head coach John Hedlund said following Sunday's victory. "Teams can't focus on one or two players scoring. We are a hard team to defend against because we have so many players that can go forward and score."
North Texas (9-3-1, 4-0-0) is now tied with Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky for first-place in the Sun Belt standings.
Karla Pineda headed in the first goal of the game in the fourth minute off a corner kick by defender Kelsey Hodges.
Just four minutes later, Michelle Young added another goal to put the Mean Green up 2-0. This was Young's 36th career goal, which moved her up to sixth-place on the North Texas career goals list.
Troy's Chelsey Williams scored the lone goal for the Trojans midway through the first half off a corner kick from Cecilia Thorngren.
Alyson Stallcup scored the first goal of her career in the 34th minute off a corner kick by Marissa Pantoja to put the Mean Green up 3-1 heading into halftime.
Amber Haggerty added to the North Texas lead with a goal just four minutes into the second half. In the 74th minute, Jackie Moreau headed in an Allison Guderian corner kick to lift the Mean Green to a 5-1 victory.
North Texas will host Florida Atlantic at the Mean Green Complex on Friday, October 5 at 7 p.m.
