DENTON - For the second straight game at home, the North Texas soccer team gave up a last-minute goal to send the match into overtime. Gonzaga scored the game-winning goal off a header in the second overtime period to send the Mean Green home with a 2-1 loss on Friday night at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.
For over 60 minutes, North Texas held a 1-0 lead and the advantage in shots and time of possession. Yet, with 10 seconds left in regulation, Karley Baggerly gave Brittany Doan a through pass and the substitute forward sent the ball into the lower right-hand corner of the net to tie the game, 1-1. Doan had entered the game six minutes before her goal.
Mikayla Anderson scored the winning goal for the Zags in the second overtime period with a header that went over goalkeeper Jackie Kerestine in front of the net.
The game was very similar to the last home match against Oklahoma, where North Texas gave up a tying goal with 30 seconds left in regulation. The Sooners also scored in the second overtime period.
Karla Pineda put North Texas ahead, 1-0, in the 28th minute with a goal off a free kick. The midfielder curled a shot from 25 yards out into the left-hand corner of the goal.
