DENTON--Men finish fourth and women earn fifth in the Mean Green's second track and field meet of the weekend.
After the women placed second and the men got third at Friday's Texas A&M Team Invite, the J. D. Martin Invitational gave the team another challenge.
"I think that this weekend was a good start," said head coach Carl Sheffield. "We had a good fall, and even after the winter break our expectations were high."
Senior Deja McKnight bested her previous season-best weight throw of 15.7m to 15.82m, which earned her fifth place. Senior Jessica McNew improved her 3.05m pole vault from Friday to 3.45m on Saturday, earning her sixth place. Junior Riley Donovan improved his shot put from 12.17m to 13.45, earning him third place.
"This was a great opportunity for some of our athletes who competed at A&M to come back and get a taste of what it would be like to final at the Conference meet, which is in five weeks," said distance coach Stefanie Slekis.
Many athletes were able to improve upon their performances from the day before. Both meets this weekend gave freshman and returning runners the opportunity to see a benchmark for where they are after coming back from winter break. Slekis said it was a "good opportunity for the athletes to compete again before they compete at Texas Tech in two weeks."
Up Next For The Mean Green
The Mean Green will compete at the Masked Rider Invitational in Lubbock, on Jan. 30.
