WACO - The North Texas cross country teams had to wait out a lightning delay before opening the 2016 season with a strong showing at the Bear Twilight Invitational Thursday night.
Due to a lightning delay, the men's team was forced to run a shortened 4k race instead of a 6k to finish before darkness. The results were also changed to separate dual meets with the men's team defeating Baylor (20-35) and Texas State (23-32). The women's team went 2-0 after defeating TCU (26-31) and Texas State (15-48).
"I thought the first meet went really well considering the shorten race for the men's team due to lightning," cross country coach Stefanie Slekis said. "It was a great start for freshman Florian Lussy after finishing first and senior James Coleman coming in second on the men's side. The women's team had a strong showing with sophomore Susannah Lynch and junior Christina Moralez leading the way."
The women's team ran a scheduled 4k race as Lynch came in 10th with a time of 14:24.8 and Moralez was 15th at 14:36.1. Senior Susie Kemper finished 24th with a time of 15:10.8 and junior Brittany White was 28th at 15:12.8. Senior Kylee Kittrell completed the scoring in 30th touching in at 15:15.4.
The men's team was led by freshman Florian Lussy, who came in first (12:13.7) in his Mean Green debut. Senior James Coleman finished second with a time of 12:15.5 and junior Mike Lowe touched in fifth at 12:22.1. Sophomore Alex Cleveland was 12th with a time of 12:31.7 and sophomore Kyle Maloney was 13th at 12:32.5 to complete the top five.
