North Texas Track & Field Earns USTFCCCA Academic Award

NEW ORLEANS - The North Texas women's track & field team and four individual student-athletes were honored academically for the 2016-17 season, announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Senior James Coleman, sophomore Javier Lopez-Ibarra, sophomore James Cole, and freshman Kristyn Archuleta were honored as individuals.
Cole, a native of Mission, Texas, had a 3.69 GPA in biology and finished seventh at the C-USA Outdoor Championships in the 100-meter dash. Cole also qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary round after a career-best mark of 20.97 in the 200-meter dash at the Bobcat Classic.
Coleman, a native of Melbourne, Australia, had a 3.73 GPA in psychology and finished third at the C-USA Outdoor Championships in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Coleman broke the school record in the steeplechase with a time of 8:54.04 and competed at the NCAA West Preliminary round.
Lopez-Ibarra, a native of Mexico City, Mexico, had a 3.66 GPA in business and finished fourth at the C-USA Outdoor Championships in javelin. Lopez-Ibarra also competed at the NCAA West Preliminary round.
Archuleta, a native of Alamogordo, New Mexico, had a 3.80 GPA and earned first place at the C-USA Outdoor Championships with a school record throw of 49.39 meters in javelin. Archuleta finished 24th at the NCAA West Preliminary round in javelin.
The North Texas women's track & field team (3.15 GPA) was honored along with 218 total Division one women's teams that were named All-Academic by the association.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic track & field team, the student athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards:
• For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org.
• For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
