DENTON – North Texas Cross Country heads to College Station to compete in the inaugural Arturo Barrios Invitational Saturday on the Dale Watts Course against a tough field of 28 teams including two nationally-ranked programs as well as four SEC teams and six Big 12 schools.
The Mean Green men will begin the invite at 9 a.m. in the 8k and face top programs Oklahoma State and Middle Tennessee, who are ranked 24thand 28th, respectively. UNT women are scheduled to start at 9:45 a.m. and will also confront nationally ranked OSU, the 29th-ranked team in the nation.
"This is a new meet this year, and it looks to be by far the deepest competition we have had yet this season," said Head Coach Kevin Williams. "Almost every school in Texas is going to be here, and it will show us how we stack up against teams before we return to race the regional on the same course November 9th."
Teams also competing include: Houston Baptist, Louisiana Lafayette, McNeese State, North Texas, Prairie View (men), Rice (men), Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, SMU (women), Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Texas Arlington, Texas Southern (men), Texas State, University of Guelph, UT Rio Grande Valley, and UTSA.
"Both the men and the women are coming off of their hardest training block of the season," said Williams. "We have had three weeks since our last competition to get healthy and put work in. For the men, Florian Lussy and Jack Beaumont should be looking for a high finish individually and our 1-5 runner spread should be closer than ever.
"For the women, we have been increasing race distance all year and this will be our first 6k of the season. Rea Iseli has had one of here best training blocks ever and more importantly is running confidently. Cassidy Adams has also had great training and should be looking for a great finish."
The meet's namesake, Barrios, was a member of the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame and was a three-time Southwest Conference champion as an Aggie and held school records at 5,000 and 10,000 meters. In 1985 he was the silver medalist in the NCAA Championships at 10,000m. Barrios represented Mexico in the 1988 Olympic Games, placing fifth in the 10,000m, and set world records at distances of 10,000m and 20,000m along with the one-hour run.
